Collection Assistant

The Ottawa Valley Historical Society is seeking to hire a motivated individual to work as a Collection Assistant at the Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village, Pembroke’s community Museum, from May 22nd to August 10th, 2018.

Duties include:

  • accession backlogged artifacts and put them into storage or into an exhibit
  • assist the Curator to process incoming artifact or archival donations
  • set up an outreach exhibit at the local library
  • work on an inventory of Area 3 and make notes on action items for each artifact
  • entering accession records into the collection management database
  • record temperature and humidity once a week in designated areas of the Museum
  • photographing textiles and labelling storage boxes with photos
  • rolling and storing quilts and other textiles
  • responding to research requests from the public
  • assist in providing tours of the Museum to the general public and school groups when needed
  • assist in putting together exhibits and/or presentations for outreach events
  • cleaning and maintenance of the Museum and grounds as required

Qualifications:

This job is suited to a University or college student from a community/social studies field, i.e. museum studies, history, etc.   Preference will be given to a student enrolled in a Museum studies program.  As this job includes a fair amount of computer collections work, the successful candidate should have a good knowledge of Microsoft Office and various programs.

  • Good public speaking skills
  • An interest in history and heritagedExperience working in a Museum is an asset but not necessary
  • Research skills
  • Photography skills

Must be a full-time student this past spring and returning to full-time studies in the fall.  Bilingualism is a definite asset.
